Eli Lilly 's raised guidance stole the show Tuesday, offsetting mixed first-quarter results and propelling shares higher by nearly 6%. Eli Lilly Why we own it: Eli Lilly's best-in-class drugs should enable growth above the industry average for many years to come. At their highs of the morning, shares of Eli Lilly traded above their all-time closing high of $792.28 set on March 4. In general, the more-bullish financial outlook helps make Eli Lilly's high price-to-earnings ratio coming into earnings more tolerable for investors. Tirzepatide is the active ingredient in both Eli Lilly's diabetes treatment Mounjaro and its anti-obesity drug Zepbound. Based on that calculation, earnings will be lower by about 13 cents per share, he said, in research published last Tuesday. "Strong demand for Mounjaro & Zepbound can easily pull through in 2H24 and make up for any 1H24 shortfalls." For the week ended April 19, combined prescriptions of Mounjaro and Zepbound rose 63% year over year, according to IQVIA. Wells Fargo Mohit Bansal said he expects investors to look past any Trulicity shortfalls as the focus is firmily on Zepbound and Mounjaro for Lilly's future growth.

Sales of some Eli Lilly drugs — including its best-selling product last year — appear to be softening, according to Wall Street analysts. JPMorgan flagged similar trends for Trulicity, which led all Lilly drugs with $7.13 billion in sales for all of 2023. European Union drug regulators found no evidence that highly popular weight loss and diabetes drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic are linked to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and self-injury, the regulator said Friday. The review examined several drugs from Novo Nordisk , including Wegovy and Ozempic. Clinical trials from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have not demonstrated a link between GLP-1s and suicidal thoughts. The probe also included other active ingredients in older weight loss and diabetes drugs, including dulaglutide, exenatide and lixisenatide. Results from another study conducted by the agency also did not support a link between GLP-1 drugs and the risk of suicidal thoughts.

Victoria Klesty | ReutersThe insatiable demand for weight loss drugs is trouncing supply, leaving many patients struggling to find the injectable treatments. Bottom line Eli Lilly delivered a strong report Tuesday. Still, it's not a surprise to see shares of Eli Lilly fall nearly 2% Tuesday, to around $694 each. Despite doubling manufacturing capacity year over year in 2023, Eli Lilly said demand for its GLP-1s is "likely to outpace supply" this year. Eli Lilly rode soaring demand for diabetes and weight-loss treatments to a better-than-expected finish in 2023, and the drugmaker expects momentum to carry into the new year. Lilly said on Tuesday that revenue could climb as much as 22% this year, as star sellers like the diabetes drug Mounjaro and its new weight-loss counterpart, Zepbound, gain market share. Mounjaro sales jumped 65% to $2.21 billion in the fourth quarter compared with the third quarter. Doctors also prescribe that drug off-label for weight loss, which is one of the hottest areas of pharmaceutical sales. An Eli Lilly and Company pharmaceutical manufacturing plant is pictured in Branchburg, New Jersey, March 5, 2021. U.S. inspectors recently uncovered new manufacturing problems at an Eli Lilly plant that has been under scrutiny by federal investigators, according to government records obtained by Reuters. They included problems in tracking manufacturing process and quality controls, as well as lapses in its calibration of equipment and failure to properly maintain facilities and equipment, the inspection report shows. Yet the Indianapolis-based drugmaker has been cited multiple times for manufacturing problems at its U.S. plants over the last few years, Reuters has reported. Three regulatory experts who reviewed the new inspection report described the most recent lapses as serious.

Use of Ozempic for weight loss has caused shortages across Europe. Novo Nordisk, which has earmarked $6 billion to boost production in Denmark, said last week the industry was far from being able to produce enough weight-loss drugs to meet global demand. The German association of drug wholesale distributors PHAGRO said in a statement that there was no certainty that exports were causing the shortages. Portugal, Poland, Romania, Belgium, Slovakia and Spain, in turn, have rules in place that likely make it impossible to export the drug, Affordable Medicines said. It also urged "all relevant actors" not to export the drugs.

Eli Lilly on Thursday said supply of its blockbuster diabetes drug Mounjaro has improved in the U.S. after months of widespread shortages. During an earnings call Thursday, Eli Lilly executives said the company experienced tight supply for Mounjaro throughout most of the third quarter. But U.S. product shipments of Mounjaro have recently increased, and inventory levels at U.S. drug wholesalers have improved, according to Eli Lilly CFO Anat Ashkenazi. Eli Lilly has also invested more than $3 billion to build two new manufacturing sites in its home state of Indiana. Eli Lilly's revenue from Jardiance — which it markets alongside privately held German biotech firm Boehringer Ingelheim — is likely to suffer due to Medicare negotiations. Packages of the weight-loss drug Wegovy from the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk lie on the sales counter in a Danish pharmacy. Investors would be forgiven if talk of a potential suicide risk associated with a new class of diabetes and weight loss drugs led to skittishness last week. Prior attempts to treat overweight or obese patients with medications were often plagued with side effects and drug recalls. The first is that most obesity drugs, including GLP-1s, are "centrally acting," which means they work on a patient's brain. The second is that prior obesity drugs have been withdrawn because of high rates of psychiatric disorders, he said, citing Sanofi's Acomplia as one of the more recent examples. This was not the case for the GLP-1 medications.

Eli Lilly to invest additional $1.6 bln in 2 new plants

April 17 (Reuters) - Eli Lilly and Co (LLY.N) said on Monday it will invest an additional $1.6 billion at its two new manufacturing sites in Indiana, United States to support the manufacturing of its recently approved cancer drug, Jaypirca, among others. The company's total investment commitment in the facilities now stands at $3.7 billion, Eli Lilly said. The company in January announced plans to invest an additional $450 million to expand capacity of a plant in North Carolina and meet the strong demand for its blockbuster diabetes drug Trulicity and recently launched Mounjaro. Its commitments for expansion of the North Carolina site are $1.7 billion. Reporting by Leroy Leo in Bengaluru; Editing by Shinjini GanguliOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Eli Lilly (LLY) reported mixed fourth-quarter results Thursday morning, but we're looking through the stock's post-earnings sell-off because there's no change to the pharmaceutical giant's bright long-term potential. Bottom line There's definitely some noise surrounding Eli Lilly's results, including sales of its key diabetes drug Mounjaro. Eli Lilly began its rolling submission to the FDA in late 2022. None of them undercut the multiyear Eli Lilly investment story, making Thursday's stock sell-off an attractive buying opportunity. It is a "very complicated" process to make that kind of drug, Ricks said, so it cannot just scale up overnight.
